A major exhibit on the plugged-in world of communications

Connexions

The 900 m2 attraction features a rich array of communications technology and devices including telephones, telegraphs, televisions, radios, and even virtual reality -- a huge hit with the kids. Both the young and the young at heart are encouraged to learn by doing, touching, experiencing and having fun.

Calling with old phone"Electric and electronic communications is a field that is changing so dramatically and so quickly", explains Ernie DeCoste, the museum's Curator for Communications Technology, "it's important that this part of our history be preserved." CONNEXIONS captures not just history, but imagination. It equips people with information today so they can better decide what type of communications technology will meet their needs for tomorrow.

2 kids with giant phoneCONNEXIONS' many interactive displays showcase important artifacts such as one of the first batteryless radio receivers built in Toronto in 1925 and the first short-wave radio transmitter that connected Canada to England in 1926. Inquisitive listeners satisfy their curiosity as they pick up a 2 girls with old phoneturn-of-the-century phone and eavesdrop on a party line. Visitors step into a period living room where they can nestle into a deep, velvet couch and relive the magic moments of early radio days. "Try it" stations are generously sprinkled throughout the exhibit where the curious learn first-hand how communications technology works. The "Interconnexions" section of the exhibit beckons with a household of the future, complete with computers, entertainment centres and communication devices that allow a glimpse of what's to come.
