Executive Biographies

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum, currently under the direction of Mr. Stephen Quick, is a component of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation under the supervision of the President and Chief Executive Officer Ms Denise Amyot.

Stephen Quick

Deeply involved in Canada’s arts and culture sector, Mr. Quick has been painting professionally since 1978, and has been a professional aircraft and military illustrator since 1984. He spent 27 years in the Canadian publishing industry, including senior positions with both McClelland & Stewart and Stoddart Publishing. He has also worked within the public sector, including positions at the Department of Canadian Heritage and the National Gallery of Canada, prior to becoming Associate Director General of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in 2008. In April 2010, Mr. Quick was appointed as the Director General of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

“As museums,” says Mr. Quick, “we should not only function as stewards and guardians of our collective past, but be proactive in introducing future generations to the tools that will help forge their future. We should act as extensions of established learning institutions, helping to shape the future and engender pride in Canadian endeavours by telling the stories of those who have dared follow their dreams, and by showcasing the next wave of exploration and innovation.”

Fernand Proulx

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum, currently under the direction of Mr. Stephen Quick, is a component of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation under the supervision of Interim President and Chief Executive Officer Mr Fernand Proulx.

As Interim President and CEO, Mr Proulx assumes responsibility for managing the overall operations of the Corporation in accordance with its legislated mandate, as well as for executing the Corporation’s corporate plan.

The mandate of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation is to foster scientific and technological literacy throughout Canada. The Corporation and its three museums – the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and the  Canada Science and Technology Museum – tell the stories of Canadian ingenuity and achievement in science and technology and demonstrate how these accomplishments have contributed to the building of our country.

Fern joined the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation in 1995 as Director of Finance and Administration and became in 2001 the Corporation’s Executive Director of Finance, Administration and Facilities.

Prior to joining the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation, Mr Proulx worked in financial management and business planning and improvement from 1985 to 1995 in the public and private sectors for organizations, including the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau Quebec, Hercules Canada Inc. in Mississauga, ON, Lumsden Brothers Company Limited in Burlington, ON, and National Grocers Co. Ltd in Ontario.

Mr Proulx has obtained his Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Windsor, has advanced standings with the Certified General Accounts of Ontario, and is a graduate of the Museum Leadership Institute of the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, California.

In addition to leading the Corporation’s United Way Campaign, Fern’s community involvement includes volunteering at the Food Bank, acting as a career mentor for the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, and joining the Board of Directors of the Diefenbunker Museum in Carp, ON.
