Family Literacy Day at the Canada Aviation Museum

Ottawa—On January 30, 2009, the Canada Aviation Museum opened its doors and welcomed over 300 youngsters for the Ottawa Family Literacy Week “bookend” event. The children were treated to a wide range of fun hands-on type learning activities featuring the Silver Dart, the first powered aircraft to fly in Canada. All compliments of the Canada Aviation Museum, a strong supporter of early literacy initiatives.

The event highlights were the appearances and readings by Canadian children’s book creators, including Francois Gauvreau, Rachna Gilmore, Lucie Papineau, Bruno St-Aubin and Frieda Wishinsky. After a dynamic closing performance by the touring company Les Aviateurs, the children who came from all across the region left richer for experience.

As part of its national mandate the Canada Aviation Museum supports outreach programs such as this that celebrate Canada’s rich aviation heritage.

Similarly, the event was also a fitting prelude to its upcoming launch event for “The Fantastic Flight of the Silver Dart”, a new children’s book. Authored by Linda Brand, a Museum staff member, and published in English and French by the Museum, this book tells the story of Canada’s first powered flight.
