Canada Aviation Museum — New Spring Line Up

Ottawa—The Canada Aviation Museum is celebrating spring with a return to its summer schedule as of May 1, 2009, opening daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is presenting a host of new programs and activities to augment the old favourites.

The return of the Vintage Biplane Program and New this season Helicopter Rides

For those who have only dreamed of taking wing to soar above the daily routine, the Canada Aviation Museum is once again offering a flying program.This summer visitors will again have the opportunity to experience the unique and thrilling view of the National Capital Region from an open cockpit with return of the popular biplane rides! New this year, visitors will have the chance to experience a flight in a helicopter. Please see our website for details and times and availability.

Vintage Wings Flying Visits

One Sunday per month beginning in June, Vintage Wings of Canada aviators will be bringing unique vintage aircraft to the Museum to give visitors a chance to experience the sound and smells of aircraft in their natural element. The pilots will be giving presentations on just what it feels like to fly these unique time capsules. Do not miss this opportunity to talk to the pilots who fly these aircraft. Aviation Adventures

Throughout the summer, from July to September, children will enjoy special daily activities prepared exclusively for them. Children ages 4-7 will get the chance to have a tour of the aircraft collection tailored for young minds, including discovery type hands-on activities, dress-up, and crafts while children ages 6 and up will create exciting 3D paper aircraft models.

Special Family Sunday: Friends are Forever

On May 10, friends of the Museum, the Royal Netherlands Embassy will join forces at the Museum to give visitors the opportunity to participate in a celebration of “Operation Manna” the dropping of food and supplies to the embattled and isolated Dutch people in 1945. This special anniversary marks an important event in Canadian history. Special guests include RCAF Veteran Stan Jones, a former radio operator and crew member of the Bad Penny Lancaster which flew some of the first flights of Operation Manna, and Lt. Col. Henry Schevers, Royal Netherlands Embassy.

Art Flight Exhibition

On May 15, the Museum will once again host its Art Flight competition. The work of international aviation artists, from the truly abstract works of pioneers in aviation invention, to the flights of fancy imagined by the dreamers of yesterday and today will be on display in the Mezzanine Robert W. Bradford Gallery of Aviation Art. The 2009 edition of this juried competition will interpret the theme Miles, Milestones and Moments to celebrate the centennial of the first powered flight in Canada on February 23rd 1909.

International Museum Day

On May 18, the Canada Aviation Museum will once again open its doors with FREE dmission for all visitors to celebrate International Museum Day. The program will feature demonstrations, tours and much more, including, an Aerial Kite Photography display and presentation by special guest Carl Bigras from the Ottawa Kite Club. Canadian Aviation Artist Association member François Gauvreau will also be onsite to offer an Introduction to Aviation Art Workshop as well as a tour of the Art Flight exhibition. Advance registration is recommended for the workshop at 613-993-8109.

Centralaires Concert Series

On May 31, the Centralaires Concert Band will offer its last performance of the popular 2008-2009 series. The 60 minutes concert entitled “A Flying Salute” will feature military music, enjoyed by all who love parades. This concert series, presented among a treasure of vintage aircraft is one of the best kept secrets in the city and is not to be missed.

New at the Canada Aviation Museum: as of April 1, 2009, admission for Canadian Veterans is FREE. This gesture is a small token of gratitude for the selfless contribution that Canada’s veterans have made to their country.
