Winners – Artflight 2007 Competition

Ottawa—Winners of the Canada Aviation Museum’s fourteenth annual competition in aviation art were announced during an official ceremony at the Museum in Ottawa. John Walmsley from Stouffville, Ontario, took top honours for the work entitled Hot Seat on Cool Blue. The Artflight 2007 exhibition includes almost 40 works of art from artists across Canada.

The other winners were: Second Prize, Martin Myers from Toronto, Ontario for Mitchell’s Masterpiece; Third Prize, D’Arcy MacEachern from Ottawa, Ontario for Mirage; and three honourable mentions went to, Geoff Bennett from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia for Hannibal Found!; Ardell Bourgeois from Chilliwack, British Columbia for Traces and ONI from Newmarket, Ontario for Canadian Triumph. A jury prize was also awarded to Jake Nesbitt from Ottawa, Ontario for Concorde.

The Canada Aviation Museum has held regularly this aviation art competition and exhibition, since its inception in 1992, with over 1000 works having been submitted and over 500 pieces of aviation art having been selected for display, showcasing the work of Canadian and International artists.

This year over 60 works of art were submitted, including two and three dimensional entries. Each competition is given a theme, with Art Flight 2007 focusing the artists to offer their interpretation of Abstractions of Flight. The interpretations were open to the truly abstract works inspired by invention, or style creating one of the most unique Art Flight exhibitions to date.

The jury members were Ms. Catherine Sinclair, Curator of the Ottawa Art Gallery, Mr. Russ Niles, Editor of the Canadian Aviator Magazine and Mr. Charles Kadin, Past President of the Canadian Aviation Artists Association and a previous Art Flight winner.

The competition itself has a number of goals: to encourage Canadian artists work with aviation subjects; to stimulate experimentation with a wide range of styles in the depiction of the subject, and to provide a stimulating and changing addition for visitors to the Canada Aviation Museum.

The Canada Aviation Museum, Canada’s premier aeronautical collection, and among the best in the world, is located at the intersection of the Aviation and Rockcliffe Parkways in Ottawa. The Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Free parking.
