Part 2: Instruments for Electronic Music Studios

Conclusion to Part 2

Hugh Le Caine demonstrates a later prototype of the Multi-Track, with the Sonde in the background. (National Library)

Although instruments have been presented here individually, they were intended to work together within the context of the electronic music studio, one controlling another, one feeding sounds to another, in configurations designed for each individual application. All of Le Caine's studio instruments could be used in combination with one another in this way. Several modular units, such as touch sensitive keys, appeared in several instruments and were used for varied purposes. It was as if the components of the Sackbut were separated into independent units, or modules, so that composers could design their own "instruments." Each module within the studio context could be assigned to a role in a temporary structure suited to a specific task.
