New site for the Canada Science and Technology Museum

The Canada Science and Technology Museum showcases Canada’s achievements in science and technology and inspires all Canadians to engage with their scientific and technological past, present, and future.

The Museum’s collection would benefit enormously from being displayed in a larger, purpose-built facility. In its current location, only 2% of the collection can be presented in the available public exhibition space. For a number of years, partners and community members have urged the Museum to examine various relocation options.

Museum Staff and Board Members have been reviewing sites and studying best practices internationally, as well as innovative ideas for the construction of a world-class complex. To date, four sites in the National Capital Region meet the requirements, including the now closed Domtar site that overlaps the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau. All sites have been examined against a set of criteria, including the capacity to showcase Canadian innovations — past, present, and future — in a green, smart, connected, and “living” building symbolizing innovation in Canada, and the location in the heart of the National Capital Region. A project of this magnitude requires the rallying of partners and funding, and fundraising has already begun through the Canada Science and Technology Museum Foundation. To date, no direction has been provided by the federal government regarding a future site for the Museum.

In the meantime, the Corporation's three science and technology museums -- the Canada Agriculture Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and the Canada Science and Technology Museum -- remain very active. They engage with nearly 8 million Canadians annually through their programs, partnerships, and compelling visitor experiences, sharing the past, present, and future of science, technology, and society. The Museum looks forward to the June 23, 2010, opening of In Search of the Canadian Car, an exhibition that will fascinate car enthusiasts nationwide. And, the Museum will continue to work with partners and government so that all Canadians fully benefit from their national science and technology collection, and appreciate its economic, social, environmental, and cultural relevance.
