Launch of the National Science and Technology Week 2011

Ottawa, Friday, October 14. – Today marked the official launch of the 2011 National Science and Technology Week (October 14th to 23rd). The launch was celebrated at the Canada Science and Technology Museum with the opening of a special exhibition marking the 75th anniversary of CBC/Radio Canada.

National Science and Technology Week is a celebration of the significance of Canada's science and technology heritage, the importance of science and technology in today's world, and Canada's ongoing role as a world leader in innovation. The week's activities involve over one hundred participating organizations, including government, industry, educators, and science outreach along with thousands of individual Canadians across the country. National Science and Technology Week creates diverse opportunities for Canadians to learn about the impact and importance of science in the world around them. One of its goals is to inspire youth to consider careers in science and technology.

"The Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation is proud to be the national coordinator of the 2011 National Science and Technology Week" said Denise Amyot, President and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation. "As keepers of Canada's scientific and technological collection, we encourage all Canadians to engage with their scientific and technological past, present and future."

Highlights of National Science and Technology Week 2011 include special activities and presentations each day at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, Natural Resources Canada's Science Funfest in Ottawa, interactive displays at Telus World of Science in Vancouver, an IT Day celebration at Science East in Fredericton, tours at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon, and the Praxis Family Science Olympics at Medicine Hat High School in Alberta.
