More science partners than ever for the Coolest science week-end of Winterlude this year

OTTAWA, February 12, 2014 – Cool Science Saturday keeps growing: this year, over 20 science partners will gather at the Canada Science and Technology Museum this Saturday, February 15, for a fun-filled day showcasing the coolest science demonstrations.

Among this year’s exciting additions, Biodiversity Conservancy International’s collection of bugs and snakes might challenge Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s bug collection, one of last year’s crowd favourites. One thing is for sure: lovers of creepy-crawly critters will get an eyeful.

On an even smaller scale, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will be demonstrating the microbiology laboratory equipment they use to prevent bacteria from ruining the food we eat. The Public Health Agency of Canada will be demonstrating their disease-detective skills, showcasing their mobile laboratory, and the heavily-protective gear they wear as they manipulate some of the most dangerous germs in the world to prevent disease. Health Canada will also be on hand to reveal the surprising composition of the dust in your house, and measuring how much of these tiny airborne particles we breathe in.

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. will be on hand demonstrating the skills, techniques and equipment used to blow glass for scientific purposes.

Of course, it’s February, and Winter’s not over yet, so you may want to check out Natural Resources Canada’s Polar Continental Shelf Program’s Arctic Field Camp to pick up new tricks and techniques on how to stay warm. They’ll also be displaying the world’s oldest rock; see if you can guess how old it is.
