From Flint Stones To Photonics: New exhibition explores the science and beauty of light

Ottawa — On Tuesday, November 29, 2005, the major new exhibition Odyssey of Light will open to the public at the Canada Science and Technology Museum.

An unusual combination of science and art, the exhibition takes visitors on a dazzling exploration of the very nature of light. Over a hundred carefully selected artifacts and art installations illustrate the fascinating role light has played in the evolution of human activity. Hands-on modules and experiments will allow the visitor to explore and experience the unique qualities of light.

A dramatic ‘object theatre' features prisms, mirrors, lenses and lasers that demystify the science of light. The history and development of artificial light is traced through artifacts, including flint stones, seal oil lamps, gas streetlight fixtures, and luminescent keyboard. These and other technological instruments are displayed among works of art which apply the characteristics of light, including stained glass, holograms and sculpture.

To complement the CSTM's perennial appeal to family audiences, this exhibition will also have special interest to artists, young adults, and people involved in the region's dynamic photonics industry.

The exhibition is a production of the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City, in close collaboration with the Canada Science and Technology Museum and the Montreal Science Centre. This is the first of three major exhibitions hosted at CSTM over the next five years as a result of this innovative partnership.

From trains to telephones, from satellites to snowmobiles, all the Canada Science and Technology Museum's activities and exhibitions offer insight into Canada's rich science and technology heritage. Main exhibition halls and displays are open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays, except holidays. Admission is $6; $3 for children (ages 4-14); $5 for students and seniors; $14 for a family (2 adults and 3 children); children under 4 are free. The Canada Science and Technology Museum is located at 1867 St. Laurent Boulevard and offers free parking on-site.

Media are invited to a preview of the exhibition tomorrow morning, Thursday, November 24 at 10:00 a.m.
