Public Astronomy Activities

Partial Solar Eclipse

Partial Solar Eclipse

Special Location:
Kingston, Ontario (Murney Tower at King St. and Barrie St.)

Join in this spectacular astronomical event, as the Moon eclipses the Sun. The Canada Science and Technology Museum will be on-site in Kingston with Queen's University and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada with telescopes, eclipse glasses and safe viewing equipment to see this rare event.

Join us as of 5:00 p.m. on the waterfront at King St. and Barrie St. to partake in outdoor astronomy activities for the whole family and enjoy romantic waterfront views of the setting Sun. The eclipse begins at 5:37 p.m. until the Sun sets, weather permitting, dress warmly.


Star Gazing

Stargazers of all ages enjoy an evening of astronomy at the Museum’s Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Weather permitting, visitors can look through the historic 15-inch telescope at the stars, the planets, and the Moon.

This program is free with donation. Your generosity helps the Museum maintain the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory and the astronomy programs.

Solar Observing

Solar Observing (NEW)

Safely observe the Sun using the Museum’s solar telescopes at the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Discover bright solar prominences and dark sunspots on the Sun’s surface.

International Astronomy Day Celebration



Family Astronomy Workshops

These activities are still being offered even if the Museum is closed. Activities will take place in the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory and a classroom that is separate from main Museum building.

Family Astronomy Workshops

Designed for kids ages 6 to 12, these hands-on family workshops feature take-home crafts. Each workshop offers new discovery activities to encourage children’s exploration of the world of astronomy.

Duration: 90 minutes

Colour Me Cosmic

Have fun with the colourful world of astronomy, from infrared to UV light, then create a black-light cosmic craft to bring home.

Make Your Own Telescope

Build your very own telescope and learn how to use it to find your favourite planets and stars.

3D Constellation Model

Friday, January 30, 2015
7 p.m.

Discover the stars in the constellation of Orion the Hunter, and create a 3D model of the constellation in the sky.

Crazy Comets

Friday, February 27, 2015
7 p.m.

Watch a live demonstration with dry-ice comets, learn how these mysterious Solar System objects are formed, and create your own comet to take home.

Monster Black Holes

Friday, March 27, 2015
7 p.m.

Build a 3D model of a galaxy to learn how giant black holes behave at the centre of galaxies.

Starry Night

Friday, May 1, 2015
7 p.m.

Learn about the spring sky constellations, make your own map of the stars, and learn how to navigate your way across a starry night.
