Ice Cream Festival

Museum visitors will learn about the journey from cow to cone at the Ice Cream Festival. They can practice their milking technique on the Museum’s wooden cow, and learn how dairying technology now includes milking machines and even robotic milkers. Visitors can help make ice cream with an old-fashioned manual ice cream maker, and then taste the fruits of their labour. Step back through time to the 1950s and discover the history of the ice cream scoops as well as sundaes, including a sample of this delicious treat. Other activities include a crowd pleasing performance by Monkey Rock Music, a performance by a steelpan musician, sampling marshmallow & chocolate dipped ice cream cones, and a kid’s corner including crafts and games. A local beekeeper will also be on site to give visitors the buzz about honeybees, and explain why pollinators play an essential role in ice cream production. A variety of food services will also be on site. This will be a tasty treat of a day not to be missed!

Ice Cream Making - Memory Park

Help make ice cream the old fashion way using a manual ice cream maker. Visitors will be able to sample this delicious velvety smooth ice cream.

Ice Cream Sundae Tasting (ongoing)
Closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Step back in time to a 1950s style Soda Fountain Shop and learn about the history of sundaes. Discover how this treat soon became one of the most popular desserts of choice for the young and young at heart. Plus, get the scoop on scoops and discover how the ice cream scoop has changed over time.

Marshmallow & Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cone Tasting (ongoing)
Closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Join us in our demonstration kitchen where you will find our staff getting creative dipping ice cream cones in melted marshmallows & chocolate. Plus, learn about the ice cream cone’s history and discover the ingredients used to make one.

Dairy Farmers of Ontario – From Cow to Cone (ongoing)

Find out how much milk a cow produces each day, and how much of that milk is cream. How many ice cream cones does that make? The quantities are truly amazing! You can even practice your milking technique on the museum’s wooden cow.

Meet a Local Beekeeper – Near Admission Booth (ongoing)

A local beekeeper will be on site to give visitors the buzz about honeybees and their role in ice cream production. 

Monkey Rock Music Performance
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Ottawa’s own Monkey Rock Music will be on site to give a rockin’ performance for kids and their families. This show is not to be missed and 100% fun. Singing along is encouraged.

Steelpan Musician 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Come listen to the sweet sounds of the Carribean! A steelpan musician will be on site to play this musical instrument originating from Trinidad and Tobago.

Cream Separation 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Have you ever wondered how your local dairy produces 2% milk or 35% whipping cream? Learn about the separation of milk and cream while turning the crank of a centrifugal cream separator.

Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue

SBO-OVSAR is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization that assists individuals and communities through search and rescue operations, education and prevention programs, and by providing support to emergency response organizations. Come and meet some of their members, and learn about Search and Rescue, and their Prevention Programs.
