During the Second World War, Canadians were regularly reminded that the war reached back from the battlefront to Canada’s fields, kitchens, and dining tables. Wartime propaganda reinforced the message that allied victory depended as much on efficient consumption of food at home as on military success on foreign battlefields.

This display explores the story of food on the Canadian home front between 1939 and 1945. Focusing on shopping, eating, conserving, and volunteering, we see how Canadians fought a “war for food” to support Canada’s overseas war efforts.
