Green Skies Ahead exhibition opens at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum

June 16, Ottawa — Green Skies Ahead, a new exhibition exploring energy efficiency in the aviation sector, opened today at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

Green Skies Ahead will take visitors on a tour of the innovative carbon-friendly technology that will shape commercial aviation over the next fifty years: high-efficiency jet engines, new super-light, super-strong composite materials, innovative wing designs, and, cutting-edge navigation technology that will create superhighways in the sky.

"Powered flight has enriched our lives but at a cost to the environment," says Denise Amyot, President and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation. "This exhibition is a glimpse into the near and more distant future of energy-efficient, carbon-conscious aviation technology."

The exhibition will present audio, video, and touch screen technologies to provide interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. Highlights include an aircraft design lab where visitors can try to create fuel-efficient aircraft or take an up-close look at a real turbo jet.

This exhibition is part of Let's Talk Energy – Engaging Ideas for Canada's Future, a six-year national initiative designed to engage Canadians in exploring energy production, distribution, and consumption while encouraging Canadians to discuss key issues surrounding energy in Canada. Beginning in June 2011, the initiative will present groundbreaking exhibitions at the Corporation's three Museums – the Canada Aviation and Space Museum (opening June 16th), the Canada Science and Technology Museum (opening July 15th), and the Canada Agriculture Museum (opening July 1st).

This initiative is supported by a network of institutions and partners, and will offer a series of nationally distributed programs and activities such as travelling and on-line exhibitions, tools for students and teachers, as well as symposiums and workshops. (energy.technomuses.ca)
