Despite its relatively small, sleek size, the Bricklin featured a massive V8 engine.  It was promoted as fast, safe and yet also economical on gas. In reality, the Bricklin suffered from regular overheating because of the small size of the radiator. Its weight, enhanced by resin panels and the extremely heavy gull-wing doors, resulted in slower speeds and poor acceleration.

This page from a Bricklin brochure highlights the standard features of the car, and emphasizes the company’s commitment to building a safer car for passengers. Malcolm Bricklin, a supporter of the anti-smoking movement, was so committed to his view of owner safety, he did not include a lighter in the car’s design as he felt that drivers shouldn’t be smoking and driving at the same time!
