King Edward VIII travelled in a McLaughlin-Buick limousine to the offices of the British Prime Minister where he announced his abdication in December 1936. He then travelled in the same car to the ship on which he would sail into permanent exile in France. He took the car with him.

Did you know...?

Two McLaughlin-Buicks limousines were manufactured for the Royal Tour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939. One of those cars has since been used by various Governors- General, as well as by members of the Royal Family during more recent tours of Canada. It was last used by Queen Elizabeth II when she opened the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C., in 1994.
