The Montcalm was named after Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, the commander of French forces in North America during the Seven Years War. He is best known to Canadians for defending Québec City against attack by British forces, led by General James Wolfe. Both were killed in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, in 1759.
